A University of Virginia football player is giving back in a big way with a lifesaving donation. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is featuring David Marrs who recently donated stem cells to help save an elderly woman's life.

David Marrs spends a lot of time on the UVa practice field running drills and perfecting his technique.

In March of 2013 he traveled to a hospital in North Carolina to make a lifesaving donation.

“To get that phone call, it’s just something you hope happens and you want to be able to help them out,” said David Marrs, UVa Football Player.

He had an opportunity to donate stem cells to an elderly woman which helped to save her life.

“I've been very fortunate to have a healthy life and people aren't that fortunate. I want to help do that,” said Marrs.

Marrs says much of his inspiration to do this comes from his football coach Mike London.
London sponsors an annual bone marrow drive at UVa.

“I didn't hesitate to donate and my buddies were the same we all felt strongly about doing what Coach London wants us to do and I'm glad I did that,” said Marrs.

Coach London says it makes him proud to see the players on his team stepping up and donating.

“I think when it happens, your name is called and it's such a thing that you feel like you're thankful number one, but you could have the opportunity to be used to save someone else. The awareness throughout the community of the people you live in is something that these guys understand. It just takes one person to save another person,” said Mike London, UVa Football Coach.

Although, this was his first donation, Marrs is hoping it won't be his last opportunity to save a life.

The annual “Be the Match Bone Marrow Drive” is April 23 2013 from 11:00 to 3:00 pm at Newcomb Hall in the south meeting room. You have to be at least 18-years-old to donate.
