Stephanie's Heroes: James Moyer

February 4, 2013

You may have heard the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure." That phrase is holding true for one Fluvanna County kindergarten teacher. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is featuring James Moyer who's fixing up old computers and giving them to students in need.

James Moyer has been teaching kindergarten for more than a decade.

Over the years, the Cunningham Elementary School teacher has seen many advances in technology inside the classroom.

“Since I've been teaching things have changes dramatically. Children now are expected to be able to handle basic computer functions,” said James Moyer, Teacher, Cunningham Elementary School.

While students can use computers at schools, not all kids have access at home.

That’s why Mr. Moyer is collecting old computers, laptops and hard drives to build working computers for students who don't have one.

“So, if they know how to do word processing skills, it helps them later on down the road. They can do their homework and they can do reports and they're already familiar with the keyboard and how to use a mouse,” said Moyer.

Moyer also installs several educational programs for the students.

“There are so many games and things on computers now days that I don't view as being productive or educational. So, if I can give them a chance to work on educational programs that help them build their literacy skills and counting skills I'm all for it.

Many people call him a hero for what he does, but Moyer says fixing computers is a labor of love.

“When I get an e-mail from a student that I taught years ago it just means the world to me. I do get a lot out of it and it's fun,” said Moyer.

He hopes the computers will help prepare his students academically and give them the access to the same resources that other kids have at home.

If you have a computer that you're not using anymore and want to donate it, you can drop it off at Gravity's Edge in Fuvanna County.
