One Jefferson Area Board for Aging volunteer spends her free time driving dozens of miles all over all around central Virginia to help feed low income and disabled people. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is featuring Jane Greyson. She's a part of JABA's home delivery meal program, and says the visits are about much more than dropping off food.
Twice a month for the past 14 years, Jane Greyson has been stopping by JABA packing up her car with food, and delivering boxes to low income and disabled people in the Crozet area of Albemarle County.
"It makes their lives easier when they're exhausted or tired or not feeling well they can quickly have some food that is nourishing for them," said Jane Greyson, JABA Volunteer.
"While the frozen dinners, fruit and milk make a big difference for her clients, Greyson says making deliveries has another benefit. She's been able to build many long-lasting friendships.
"The people are wonderful. I enjoy getting to know them over the years. One woman I've been delivering to for 10 years. She's got great stories," said Greyson.
Greyson's clients seem to enjoy her company just as much as the food.
"When I have delivered they always ask where's Ms. Greyson. So everyone knows her for sure and likes her," said Lynda Wingfield, JABA Program Coordinator.
Clients and the folks who work alongside Greyson say she's a hero for all that she does, but she says it's just something she feels she has to do.
"I think I think of myself as someone who is available and enjoys this little niche of activity and I'm the right person in the right place at the right time," said Greyson.
As she drives from house to house, she's hoping to make each person's day a little brighter with every deliver that she makes.
