A standout Albemarle County student is leaving her mark in the community. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is highlighting Marie Fernandez who is sharing her musical talents with the sick and elderly in the Charlottesville area.
When Marie Fernandez isn't in class or participating in one of her seven honor societies at Monticello High school, you can usually find her out with her sisters playing music for folks at Martha Jefferson Hospital and other places in the Charlottesville community.
“It’s just nice to serve the community in any way we can and for us that's music,” said Marie Fernandez, Student, Monticello High School.
Marie is the oldest and leads the Fernandez Trio as they play hymns and classical pieces for hospital patients, visitors and staff.
“I think we definitely get to see it when we get the reactions from the people coming by and it’s so great to see smiles on their faces and the things they say,” said Fernandez.
Marie especially looks forward the reaction from patients.
“It's so great to just to see that they have that little bit of joy. A hospital is not typically a joyous place, but I think it’s great that we can bring them that and to see the smiles on their faces and the reactions that they have to us,” said Fernandez.
People at the hospital say Marie and her younger sisters are definitely heroes and make a difference with every note they play.
During the school year, the Fernandez Trio plays a couple of times a month at the hospital, the Martha Jefferson house, Hospice of the Piedmont and the Colonnades.
