Fourth graders from one Albemarle County elementary school are going above and beyond to make sure all students at another county school have something to eat during snack time. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes, CBS19’s Stephanie Satchell is featuring Murray Elementary's Destination Imagination team.
From pretzels and granola bars to string cheese, these fourth grade Murray Elementary School students have been working hard collecting food and money for a good cause.
“We had to hand write letters to all the grocery stores that we got assigned and some of us did a little extra,” said Karina Long, Student, Murray Elementary School.
Now these children in Murray's Destination Imagination program are presenting Agnor-Hurt Elementary with bags and boxes full of food along with gift cards and money.
“When we were looking for things to do we figured out that the free and reduced lunch didn't cover snacks so we wanted to help a school because kids wouldn't have snacks so basically lunch and dinner would be their only meals,” said Liliah Barber, Student, Murray Elementary School.
After some research, they found out that Agnor-Hurt has the highest number of students receiving free and reduce lunch in Albemarle County. 50 percent of students have nothing to eat at snack time.
“Because if they're hungry they won't be able to pay attention to the classes and then they won’t learn what they need to know,” said Barber.
With the help of this service project, they're hoping that will change.
“This is going to get us through the year. The amount of food that they gave plus the money, that's going to really help us make sure that they kids are fed and that they're happy and healthy during the school year,” said Dough Granger, Assistant Principal, Agnor-Hurt Elementary School.
The students say they're proud of themselves for what they've accomplished and they're already planning to ask for more donations to help other area schools.
