High school students in Albemarle County are raising money to end hunger. In this week's Stephanie's Heroes,CBS19's Stephanie Satchell is featuring students in the ceramics class at Western Albemarle High School. They're putting on an event called "Empty Bowls" and they're hoping to help people right in their own backyard.
Western Albemarle High School students are making pottery for a purpose. They've made more than 100 bowls.
Every piece is part of the Empty Bowls fundraiser which is aimed at ending hunger.
"It's good to give back to the people who aren't as wealthy and can't afford things like food or just everyday things," said Sarah Scott, Student, Western Albemarle High School.
Students have been working on the bowls for days. They started their creations on the pottery wheel. Later they added designs, color and the final glaze.
"I really appreciate their time and effort. They put a lot of thought and energy into their bowls and they were very generous and willing to donate them," said Laura Chatterson
Students invited the community out to a soup dinner at the school on November 21, 2013.
People made a $10 donation per bowl of soup and selected a hand-crafted bowl. Then they got to keep the dish afterwards as a reminder of all the empty bowls that still exist around the world.
"I think it's important because you really get to give back to the community and you help in a way your peers because they are part of this so you can help them have a meal," said Katlyn Tatem, Student, Western Albemarle High School.
Students made 120 bowls for the project and raised $1,300 to help feed local families.
