You can usually find Brad Kennedy fixing cars at his auto repair shop in Fluvanna County, but now he's revisiting the place here he became a hero.

In February, Kennedy was out test driving a customer's car on Sclaters Ford Road when he spotted a vehicle on fire. “As I looked down in the woods I could see the tail end of the car sitting there,” he said.

An 83-year-old Reece Belk ran off the road and got trapped under tree branches as his car caught on fire. Witnessing such a horrific site Kennedy knew he had to act fast.

“I reached up and grabbed the top of the door that was bent out and jerked it open. That gave me access to him laying in the seat."

After pulling Belk from the charred car, Kennedy and a few others carried him up the embankment to safety. Minutes later the car was engulfed in flames.

Now the community is calling Brad Kennedy a hero.

“When you do something like that you don't think about that. You're not trying to get everybody to recognize you. It's just something you do to help somebody else. That's all I was doing was helping him,” he explained.

Kennedy believes he was in the right place at the right time. He says fixing and test driving a car put him exactly where he needed to be to save a life.

CBS19 reached out to Belk, who is still recovering. He said, "I want to thank Mr. Kennedy for potentially saving my life. If the car had burned earlier I wouldn't have lived. Thank you so much."
