Street Named After Slain Charlottesville Teacher

March 14, 2012

Officials in Newark, NJ have officially renamed a street after slain Charlottesville teacher Dawn Reddick.

The Clark Elementary School 3rd grade teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting at the intersection of Maple and Hansbury avenues in her hometown of Newark in July 2011. Now that intersection has been renamed Dawn Reddick Plaza in her honor.

Witnesses say Reddick, a Golden Apple Award recipient, shielded a 7-year-old girl from the gunfire and took the fatal bullet.

The ceremony took place Monday evening. Attached are photos from the ceremony. They include a picture of Dawn's father, James Reddick holding the street sign. Another photo shows Dawn's four sisters, Michele, April, Danielle and Theresa, holding the sign.

Officials are also in the early stages of renaming a school after Reddick.
