A Hampden-Sydney College student has suffered serious burns in a fire that destroyed a campus residence.
School officials tell media outlets that the fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday at the Tiger Athletic Club House. One of the eight students in the residence at the time was flown to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center after suffering serious, but not life-threatening, burns. Another was treated for minor burns.
College officials are investigating the fire. School spokesman Thomas Shomo says early indications were that the blaze might have started in some front-porch furniture but it's unclear what the exact cause or point of origin was.
