Students Receive Life Advice from Community Mentors

June 26, 2013

Dozens of kids in Charlottesville are preparing for their futures by learning from role models in the community.

Students in Albemarle County's M-cubed Academy met at Burley Middle School on Wednesday afternoon. More than 50 students met professionals from the 100 Black Men of Central Virginia to learn about their careers.

"Everybody aspires to do something really awesome, and if we share it with each other, we might have a common interest," said Simeon Washington, a student at Jouett Middle School.

The idea is to encourage students how hard work helps to achieve their goals.

"I talked to a lot of great leaders today, so a great takeaway from this would be to be the best person I can be and be a great leader and help the community," said Jason Carson, a student at Sutherland Middle School.

The overall goal of the M-cubed Academy is to close the achievement gap between young African-American males in middle school and all other middle school students.
