Students Return to School in Fluvanna Co.

August 11, 2014

Students are finally filling up the hallways after a summer-long effort to prepare for the school year.

"What I like about the first day of school is that everything is first. First day back, a new school year, a new beginning. Those that had bad years last year get a chance to improve on it this year, those who had great years, they can make it even better. It's kind of like Christmas in August," says Fluvanna County High School Principal James Barlow.

Early Monday morning the Fluvanna County High School parking lot was flooded with parents dropping off their kids.

With a new school year come new programs, and new teachers.

Katy Wilkerson is the instructor of the new 2-year cosmetology and barbering program.

"The students are going to be working on clients and I think a lot of people in the community are also excited as well as other teachers. I've been approached by other teachers that are also asking, when are you guys going to open up the lab," she says.

Wilkerson says the hands-on experience is the perfect way to encourage juniors and seniors to start planning for their futures.

"This is such a great opportunity for many students because when they leave high school they might not, some of them will be headed to college, some of them won't be headed to college. Regardless of where they go, when they leave here they have an opportunity to make money," she says.

At the end of the program, students with a 75% average will qualify to take the State Board Exam. Passing that exam will earn them a cosmetology license straight out of high school.

Wilkerson is asking any local hair salons that have any old hair-color, to donate it to the school for use on mannequins.
