Study Shows Video Games Can Help Kids Social Interaction

What if video games could be helping your kids social life? One study shows that video games can help at a child's development... But there's a catch.

This study out of the Journal of Pediatrics looked at the use of video games in five thousand kids from ages ten to fifteen. It showed that just a little bit of gaming leads to a better adjusted child, while too much may lead to negative behavior.

"It's no longer a realistic idea that parents can keep this out of kids lives just like you can't keep junk food out of your kids lives because they would go to other kids houses. if one of the kids has access to it then other kids have access to it," Comments Doctor Patrick Tolan, professor of education at UVA.
Kids are now spending less time at the park and more time playing video games. This might now be a good thing. It may lead to a more social life.
"It's an important part of how they get along with each other. it's what they do, its a social activity and that social activity may be with someone across the county because they're playing online together but it still social activity; or maybe two kids side by side talking and enjoying the competition."
These kids have a common ground on video games. Parents just need to provide the right kind of guidance.
"The goal here is to help your children manage today's world rather than trying to hope that somehow you can keep it away and secondly this very important point that gaming is not always bad, its not always going to hurt them."
Joining your child while playing the game; teaching them how to problem solve; making sure they know what real and what isn't... That is what's important.

This study flies in the face of many others that conclude video games are bad for our kids. As we get further along more companies are coming out with games that can help development of children, and teach them how to manage situations and solve different kinds of problems.
