Study on I-81 Widening in Virginia Expanded

May 4, 2013

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Virginia highway officials are expanding the study into the possibility of widening Interstate 81 in the Roanoke and New River valley.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said Friday the study has been expanded to include additional interstate mileage in Roanoke and Botetourt counties.

Officials say that a consultant hired to do the study advised the agency that the additional mileage are much like the original study area in terms of traffic volumes and commuting patterns.

The Roanoke Times reports that the consultant said it made the most sense to study the entire 32-mile stretch for widening options, and the agency agreed.

The study will look at the environmental impacts of adding up to two northbound and two southbound lanes to I-81 in the Roanoke region.
