NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - An assisted living center in Norfolk is being sued by woman who alleges that it didn't protect her mother from an attack by another resident.

Nancy Stillman's lawsuit says a male resident attacked her 81-year-old mother on June 9, 2012. The Virginian-Pilot reports that the lawsuit cites a report from the Virginia Department of Social Services that said the center didn't protect residents from the man's known aggressive behavior.

The center is owned by an affiliate of Bon Secours Health System.

Bon Secours spokeswoman Lynne Zultanky tells the newspaper that Bon Secours takes seriously its responsibility to ensure that patients and residents receive care in the safest environment possible.

She says concerns expressed by patients, residents or family members are immediately investigated and the findings are communicated to them.
