JEWELL RIDGE, Va. (AP) - SunCoke Energy Inc. is idling a southwestern Virginia coal mine and laying off 90 workers.
Media outlets report employees at subsidiary Dominion Coal's No. 36 mine in Buchanan County were told of the company's decision Friday.
SunCoke Energy vice president of coal operations James M. Mullins says the mine has been hit by a "significant downturn" in the coal market. He says the layoffs include 51 miners and 39 underground contractors.
Four other Dominion Coal mines remain in operation.
SunCoke Energy is based in Lisle, Ill.
