Supervisor Christopher Dumler Speaks Out for the First Time Since Arrest

November 7, 2012

For the Albemarle County Supervisor facing felony sex charges, it was back to business at Wednesday's board meeting-sort of. Christopher Dumler was the only supervisor to abstain from voting on a proposed gun range to be used for training purposed for both the county and city police departments. In his first interview since his arrest last month, Dumler cited a conflict of interest as the Albemarle County Police Department has on open investigation against him.

"I will recuse myself from any votes involving the criminal justice system, the courts, and the police," Dumler said.

Dumler is facing one count of forcible sodomy. He spent two nights in jail after turning himself in to police on October 18. Per county rule, Dumler can choose to remain on the board of supervisors unless he is convicted of the felony charge. Dumler maintains he can do his job while fighting the criminal charges. But in his first meeting since the arrest, Dumler sat out of the vote on the gun range that would be located in his own district of Scottsville.

"What you saw in there was a rarity, " Dumler said of his opting out of the vote. "I don't think that's going to happen too frequently."

But some of his constituents are getting frustrated, especially when it comes to the gun range. Some say they would have liked to see him vote against it.

Dumler's vote would not have made a difference in the case of the case of the gun range at the old Keene land fill. The other five supervisors voted in favor of it. Duane Snow said the pending criminal charges against Dumler aren't a distraction to their work. "I'm personally glad to have Christopher here because he adds a great dimension to our board."

Dumler would not discuss the charges against him, but said he is pleading not guilty. His next court hearing is scheduled for December 13.
