Consumers are feeling better about the current economy and its future according to a University of Virginia study. And with the holidays right around the corner, some people say this year they're feeling better about their spending this year.

"I started my Christmas shopping early, I have relatives all over the world and they're already under the metaphorical trees, so to speak. I think consumer confidence is justifiably up," said Charlottesville resident, Ian Graham.

Over a thousand adults surveyed in and around Charlottesville generally felt better off than they did last year, expect to be better off a year from now and also expect small businesses to be in a better spot next year.

"With my dad's business and all, justin listening to him, it doesn't seem like he's having as hard a time as he did two years ago. Things were really bad then, so it seems to have settled down a bit so I guess I'm a little relieved," said Grace Ahn, a first-year UVa student.

With lots of new businesses opening up recently, that mean's jobs are opening up which some people say, gave them hope this time of year.

"I got out of school and was recently hired at Silver Chair. They had a hiring freeze but luckily I ended up getting a job and so I think confidence is up in terms of that. I know they've been hiring all throughout the fall and holidays," said recent graduate and Charlottesville resident Madison Smith.

The numbers may be up locally but some think the whole nation's numbers are up since the election.

"I think the increase in consumer confidence is directly connected with the election. There's been a lot more conversation about getting a coherent economic plan together and moving forward," said Graham.

The study noted that the positive feelings of people around Charlottesville has increased at a faster pace than those feelings of Americans in general.
