Survey: UVa Faculty Not Satisfied with Transparency, Communication

The results of a faculty survey at the University of Virginia are in and show some surprising opinions about university leadership and transparency.

The results are from 2,102 completed surveys from faculty members, representing nearly 54 percent of all eligible respondents. The survey took place before this summer's events surrounding President Teresa Sullivan's forced resignation in June.

According to the survey, faculty members say they're satisfied with their affiliation to the university, with their autonomy and the ability to shape the faculty experience, and with their insurance benefits.

However, there are many areas of concern, as well. The survey notes faculty show a low level of satisfaction with pay, with university leadership beyond the department level, with performance reviews, with communication and with transparency.

Many of those issues, notably communication and transparency, were central to faculty rallies in June supporting Sullivan's reinstatement to her post.

The survey reports faculty members hope the results can provide a clear statement of what the university needs to improve and what direction the university needs to go moving forward.
