August 13, 2013

Randy Allen Taylor has been behind bars for two days now. He was supposed to appear over video, from the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail, but the equipment wasn’t working, so they brought him to the courtroom in Lovingston.

Taylor only answered yes and no questions, although he did sigh when Alexis Murphy’s name was mentioned.

He asked for a court-appointed lawyer, and was given Scott De Bruin, in Lynchburg.

After a couple of minutes, Taylor was led away and loaded back into a deputy’s car. He would be driven back to the jail in Albemarle County, where he remains without bond.

FBI agents were not at Taylor’s home today, but a spokesperson says the search for Alexis is still very active. Agents could be seen going through the area on Monday.

“They pulled out a small travel-behind trailer,” says Larry Spencer, who lives across the street from Taylor. “A lot of stuff in bags and boxes and then they kept combing the area. And this went on, you know, all day.”

Spencer says he never saw Taylor until a few weeks ago.

“I was mowing the grass, and I just happened to look up, and there he was.”

He says Taylor would occasionally walk up and down Route 29.

“It's kind of scary because you think in a little local community like this, you know, does this really happen like this?”

Taylor is due back in court on January 9th for a preliminary hearing. At that point, the Commonwealth’s Attorney will present some of the evidence they have against him.

Randy Allen Taylor requests a court-appointed attorney.

Commonwealth's Attoney Anthony Martin released the following statement:

"An advisement hearing for Randy Allen Taylor, who is charged with abduction in the Alexis Murphy case, was held this afternoon in the Nelson County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court.

"Judge Kenneth W. Farrar appointed P. Scott DeBruin of Lynchburg, Virginia, to represent Taylor on the abduction charge. Taylor’s next appearance, a preliminary hearing, will be held in the Nelson County Juvenile & Domestic Relations District Court on January 9, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.

"The preliminary hearing will only determine whether there is probable cause to send the case to the Nelson County Circuit Court Grand Jury for trial.

"Taylor remains held without bail at this time."
The man charged in connection to the disappearance of Nelson County teen, Alexis Murphy, is set to face a judge.

Randy Allen Taylor is scheduled to make his first court hearing at 1:30 PM on Tuesday at the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in Lovingston.

Taylor will appear via video from the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail, where he has been held since his arrest on Sunday.

He has been charged with with abduction by force, relating to the disappearance of Alexis Murphy.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney says that evidence will not be presented during today’s hearing, and Taylor is not expected to enter a plea. The court will determine if Taylor has a lawyer, or wants one appointed to him.

FBI says the search is still very active for Alexis. Investigators continue to urge the public to contact them at 434-263-7050 if they had seen the GMC suburban truck driven by Taylor around the time of Alexis disappeared.

The FBI would not confirm if there will be any new updates later in the day.

This article will be updated later, following Taylor’s court appearance.
