An event in Charlottesville taught students never to take a chance on driving drunk.

Albemarle County, Charlottesville, Safe Schools/Healthy Parents, and other local organizations hosted "The Power of Choices: Teens, Decisions and Alcohol" on Monday night.

Parents and teens could visit representatives from those local organizations, including county police, who let parents and teens try on goggles that mimic a .08 blood alcohol level, the legal limit for intoxication.

Chris Sandy and Erik Krug, two men whose lives changed forever after car crashes caused by drinking and driving, shared their stories.

"Erik is a victim of a DUI crash and I'm actually an offender who caused a crash. So, tonight, we're going to relive that experience to help parents and teens understand the consequences that come along with choices...like what we made," said Chris Sandy, a speaker at the event.

People then broke out into groups to to understand teen behavior and begin a family conversation.

"Tonight is extremely important for Erik and I both to really bring this reality to the teens and parents so that they will start communicating," said Sandy. "If we can get teens and parents to start talking about things they're facing -- teens are parents both face choices every single day of their life -- but if we can get them on the same page, maybe they'll understand the [magnitude] of those types of consequences that go with choices."

"The Power of Choices" coincided with high schools' prom week and kicked off "You Choose: A Safe Prom," a messaging campaign in local high schools this week.
