After 23 years editing a Charlottesville paper, a journalist is stepping down.
Hawes Spencer, the editor of "The Hook," is leaving the job. He will stay at "The Hook" through the end of the year.
Courtney Stewart, who has worked at "The Hook" since 2002, will replace him.
Spencer has written area stories since 1989, owned The Jefferson, founded "The Hook" and the "C-Ville Weekly," started Restaurant Week and an annual short story competition that was judged by John Grisham.
"I've been allowed to run 'The Hook' precisely the way I wanted to for 10 and a half years," said Spencer. "That is such a treat, such a gift."
Spencer says he does not know what's next for him, but he has strong ties to the area, and wants to stay in Central Virginia.
