The Living Wage Campaign Greets Board of Visitors for Equal Work Equal Pay Support

February 21, 2013

The UVa. group called Corporations and Students United, greeted members of the Board of Visitors and held a mock award ceremony outside of the Harrison Institute this morning.

The ceremony was intended to raise awareness for the living wage campaign and also ask the board to show support for the well being of the university's lowest paid employees.

The students gave awards that recognized the board's performance in "Keeping wages low and bonuses high" and "protecting corporate interest rather than that of the people."

One student spoke about the living wage campaign.

"Particularly we are asking for equal work for equal pay," says Anup Gampa, UVa Grad Student. "The university seems to be contracting out more and more of the jobs on campus and we don't know what they are getting paid, we don't know who's getting employed."

" We want transparency in terms of how they are being treated, how they are being paid and we want them to be paid an equal amount."

The university has contracted out jobs to cut cost and students expressed their concern for the board's lack of support for the campaign by holding this ceremony.

This protest is one of the many actions in a series planned to publicize the living wage campaign's push on Equal Work for Equal Pay.
