The renovation of the Rotunda is ahead of schedule and the scaffolding is coming down on Thursday. The scaffolding was originally planned to go back up after final exercises but since the project is ahead of schedule it will stay down.

Will Robinson, a second-year at UVa., said, "Honestly, I'm ecstatic! As a first year, there wasn't much scaffolding at all and then most of my second year there has been scaffolding."

The roof has been the focus of the first phase and the $5.6 million budget for this project makes the historic building much safer.

Jody Lahendro, the Historic Preservation Architect for Uva., said, "The next phase of work. Which is the completion of all the portico repairs as well as the replacement of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems inside."

Fourth-years are looking forward to the scaffolding coming down because they want to be able to walk down the lawn with the Rotunda in the background just like administration has promised.

Phil Levin, a fourth-year at UVa., said, "I'm really excited the scaffolding is going to come down. I think a lot of us wanted the scaffolding down for graduation so we could have nice pictures. Unfortunately, the black shreds over the capitals are going to be there. So, we're a little disappointed but just the face that the scaffolding is coming down is, I think, a great thing for the fourth year class."

The Rotunda is an icon to not only UVa. but to the world.

Robinson said, "As a student of the University of Virginia, you just can't wait for that moment to walk down the lawn in front of the Rotunda, in front of your family and friends for graduation."

Lahendro said, "It's a world class historic site that deserves the very best that the university can do to preserve it and keep it operating for the public."
