Thousands Race in 39th-annual Charlottesville 10 Miler

March 29, 2014

Over 2,000 people gathered early Saturday morning at the starting line for one of Charlottesville’s biggest races of the year, the Ten Miler.

“I’m a little nervous, but excited,” says Kristen Albert. “We just thought it would be a good way to get in shape after having babies.”

Besides getting fit to race in the event, runners also made sure to stick with their racing routines.

“The only thing I do is have a bowl of frosted flakes before I run, so that seems to work out well,” laughs Kara Chandeysson.

Other runners have more serious pre-race rituals.

“Usually I wake up three to four hours before to prep and I actually really like to read Phillipians 4:13, which says, I can do everything through God, who gives me strength,” says Stella Bowman.

There were people who ran the race before and several who were newbies.

“I've done some small races, but the Ten miler, a year ago I never thought I would be doing this,” says Bowman.

Whether they were veterans or first timers, everyone was running for a good cause as proceeds from the race went to the Barrett Early Learning Center in Charlottesville.

“Barrett has been around for about 75 years, serving our community, and this summer they got in a situation and seemed like they were going to close,” says Maria Bell, race director. “You can't let that much history fade away.”

At the crack of dawn, the gun went off and runners weaved their way all around Charlottesville, including the downtown mall. Early morning traffic was also at a halt.

But in the end runners were relieved to see the finish line and were happy to put on dry clothes after racing for an hour in the rain.
