Thousands of Books to Sift Through at Spring Sale

March 30, 2013

People are sifting through thousands of donated books in Charlottesville. The "Friends of the Library" spring book sale kicked off Saturday to an eager crowd of readers ready to do some shopping.

The 48th annual sale is being held at the Gordon Avenue branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library. Last year's event brought in more than $100,000, and organizers are hoping to surpass that amount this year.

All of the money made at the sale will go right back to the libraries.

"The funds that we raise go towards all the programming that the library does, especially children's programming at the library and special projects," said Bill Davis, manager of the book sale. "We also donate money whenever the library has a new branch coming along. We donate a lot of money toward the Crozet library, which is in process right now."

Shoppers will also find movies, music, software, games and puzzles at the sale.

The book sale runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. until April 7. Shoppers can expect prices slashed in half the last two days of the sale. A special "Educators Day" will take place April 8, where teachers, home-schooled students and social service agencies will get $50 worth of materials for free.
