A three-car accident slowed traffic on 5th Street extended near the I-64 on and off ramps on Wednesday evening.
Albemarle County Police say six people were taken to UVa Medical Center from the scene, two of them were juveniles.
Police say a silver SUV was coming off of exit 120 accelerated into the intersection, jumped the median and hit two vehicles that were stopped in the northbound lane.
Police do not know at this point why the car accelerated and went over the median.
"It was probably a failure to maintain control of the vehicle at this point until we can get statements and information from witnesses and operators of the vehicles," said Corporal Greg Davis of the Albemarle County Police Department.
"Several months ago we had a vehicle do the same thing and there were guard rails here, and the vehicle actually jumped the guard rail so it's getting to be bad area," he said.
The accident stopped traffic for about 30 minutes before crews began to clear the scene and tow trucks arrived at about 7:45 p.m.
The condition and injuries of the drivers and passengers are unknown at this time.
