The snow has stopped falling but the problems are just beginning for many who are just now losing power. Officials warn more areas in Central Virginia could see power outages as falling trees continue to cause problems.
Jacob Foster lives on Blenheim Avenue in Charlottesville, and heard a loud noise before his power went out. "We started hearing some noise in the street," Foster said. "We went outside and saw the transformer caught fire and we lost power." Another resident described hearing "buzzing and a really loud click."
A transformer box burst into flames shortly after 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, leaving the entire block without power.
"We thought we were lucky, reading twitter everyone else had lost power," said Charlottesville High School student, Rico.
Neighbors reported the outage in Dominion Virginia Power, but with thousands of residents in Charlottesville in the same situation, officials warn it could be awhile before power is fully restored to the area.
"I'm not too worried," said Foster. "We've got all the supplies we need as long as we keep the doors shut we should be in good shape."
The thought of no heat or water doesn't worry Rico as much as the idea of not having internet or television. "I'll be very bored, I guess."
