The Wildlife Center of Virginia has been scrubbing the nail polish off the painted turtle and say they are making progress. The scrubbing sessions occur in five minute increments to cause as little stress to the turtle as possible. It is important to get the nail polish off the shell because it makes the turtle a target for predators.

The female turtle is also carrying five eggs. The center induced her this past weekend to help her lay the eggs. Sometimes in captivity, turtles struggle to lay eggs and that can be harmful.

The center is still looking for whoever painted the turtle so they can return the reptile back to the area it came from.

WAYNESBORO, Va. (AP) - Glitter and nail polish aren't glamorous for a box turtle found in Augusta County.

Someone covered the turtle's shell with multiple shades of polish and glitter. Amanda Nicholson at the Wildlife Center of Virginia says the paint job makes the turtle a target for predators.

The turtle is carrying five eggs and should be returned to where they were conceived.

But the center's staff doesn't know the turtle's history. They hope whoever painted the turtle will come forward and provide information such as where the turtle came from and how long she was in captivity.
