UVa Board of Visitors Member Resigns

October 26, 2012

(AP) - A member of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors has resigned, citing his move out of the state.

Randal J. Kirk resigned from the board in a letter to Gov. Bob McDonnell dated one day prior to the board's latest meeting on Oct. 19.

According to the letter obtained by The Washington Post, the billionaire from Southwest Virginia said he has moved to Florida and it is "not practical" for him to continue to serve on the board. Kirk also noted that his Florida residency might have disqualified him from remaining on the board because of a cap on the number of out-of-state members.

Kirk was one of the board members who supported Rector Helen Dragas following the failed effort to oust school president Teresa Sullivan in June.
