UVa. Brain Research Named a Top Discovery

Jan. 8, 2014

A group of University of Virginia researchers has been named to the number 4 spot on the 2013 list of Top Discoveries and Breakthroughs, compiled by the National Institute of Mental Health.

Researchers there have determined that the makeup of the cells and neurons in the brain is different than originally thought. They've also learned the brain is even more different from other organs.

Now, they're working toward examining individual cells in the brain.

"You know, it’s exciting to see other people excited about it as well, but it's really just the beginning. I mean, now we actually have the real work to do, which is showing that these things matter and actually contributing to our understanding of human health and being actually able to help patients."

Researchers hope to one day use their findings to help treat diseases like schizophrenia, autism, and epilepsy.
