UVa. Brings New Cabell Hall into 21st Century

Aug. 21, 2014

As students get ready for a new year at the University of Virginia, the largest classroom building on Grounds is ready for its debut after a pricey re-model.

New Cabell Hall is known as the workhorse classroom building at UVa. and it hadn't seen a major renovation since it was built in 1952.

The extensive $64.5 million facelift was done in two phases over a 3-year period. The project included moving the once cinder-block walls and bolted-down wooden desks into the 21st century with state-of-the-art instructional technology and central air conditioning, along with other updated mechanical systems.

Perhaps the real gem of the fix is the abundance of common space according to project managers, especially the newly revitalized courtyard between Old Cabell and New Cabell Halls, said Stephen Feige, project manager from Goody Clancy, the company out of Boston that designed the renovations.

"This is an important space that has been revitalized and we've created some significant social spaces for students and you can also see the large incision that we've created on the building to bring natural daylight deep into the space."

UVa. construction project manager, Craig Hilten said, "The accessibility, the connections to other buildings through this building, it's kind of a thoroughfare building in some ways, but it's also now going to be a wonderful place to teach and learn."

The renovations were funded by Virginia College Building Authority bonds.

New Cabell Hall is home to most of the language departments in the College of Arts and Sciences.

It is fully accessible and targeted for a LEED-Gold Certification.
