UVa Center for Politics Hosts 14th American Democracy Conference

November 28, 2012

The University of Virginia Center for Politics reviewed the 2012 election Wednesday. More than a dozen journalists and political experts were on grounds to discuss the outcome of the election season and to look ahead to future elections. It was all part of the 14th annual American Democracy Conference.

"Elections are an important measure of where a society is going," said Center for Politics director Larry Sabato. "You need to look at the pattern of votes to understand what a society is really all about and how it's changing, how it's transforming over time."

The conference featured three panel discussions, including question and answer sessions.

"It's a really good event where you have people in the field actually saying what happened in the election, trying to give their professional analysis," said UVa. fourth-year student Edward Smith.

About 240 people signed up to attend Wednesday's conference. George P. Bush, the son of former Florida governor Jeb Bush, delivered the keynote address.
