The University of Virginia Health System is reaching out to recruit new employees. They are looking beyond Charlottesville for their latest crop of nurses. Recruiters are getting creative with ways to find new talent.
If your summer travels took you through the Charlotte airport, you might have noticed a familiar logo: The University of Virginia Health System has a wall banner advertising hiring opportunities for nurses.
"Great nursing careers take off here."
It advertises a $5,000 signing bonus and up to $5,000 to re-locate.
Recruitment consultant Gretchen Kaufman says it can be a competitive field.
“People have a lot of choices. With our education opportunities that we have here for our nurses we want to make sure that they understand that it’s a destination for them to explore their brand new career or continue their career as a nurse."
So why reach out in North Carolina?
"The reason why we are advertising in Charlotte, North Carolina is because it's a major hub for airlines to actually do a quick stop in Charlotte do a transfer and then get here to Charlottesville. So wanted to get the word out to make sure people are aware of the opportunities."
And is it working? Kaufman says yes.
"The first or second day that we had the advertising in the airport, we received a few phone calls from nurses that actually noticed them."
A large, aging Baby Boomer population, combined with a constantly evolving industry has made for headlines warning of a nursing shortage. Kaufman says good nurses are in demand.
"Nurses are needed here at UVa. and across the country. There seems to be a trend where they are always going to be in need."
University of Virginia health recruiters are hoping that talented nurses will see these signs and look into what they have to offer.
Kaufman calls it a portable career choice with endless options of where to work. She believes once they attract the nurses with recruiting, they can keep them with the endless options UVa. health has for education and jobs.
