Ed Howell , the Vice President and CEO of the UVa Medical Center, has announced he will retire in July, 2014.

Howell became the CEO back in 2002, and has since helped to expand medical services throughout the Commonwealth.

He says that he is turning 65-years old in January and that he is ready to retire.

"This is a pretty consuming job. I've been doing it for 28 years, and frankly the energy level isn't quite what it was... It's been an honor to serve this great university, to work with the wonderful people that are a part of this medical center, to be a part of this community"

Howell says he plans to spend more time teaching now.

A national search for his replacement is already underway
