A University of Virginia men's lacrosse player is facing a felony assault charge and three misdemeanors following a November fight on the Corner.

Police arrested 21-year-old Carl Walrath, a midfielder on the men's lacrosse team, in the early morning on Nov. 24. In addition to the felony charge of assaulting a police officer, he also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

Police say as many as 10 people were involved in a fight around 2 a.m. on Nov. 24. Officers approached the group on the 1400 block of University Avenue on the Corner and ordered them to stop.

Walrath was the lone member of the group who did not calm down, police said. A police spokesman said when officers went to arrest him, Walrath punched one officer in the face and fled on foot.

He was later picked up near 13th and Wertland streets. The officer was not seriously injured.

Walrath is out on $2,500 bond and is due in court in January.

UVa. would not comment on the charges.
