The University of Virginia has a new executive vice president for health affairs.
Doctor Richard Patrick Shannon has been appointed to the position by President Teresa Sullivan.
Shannon will be in charge of both the UVa Medical Center as well as the School of Medicine.
He comes to UVa from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. An internist and cardiologist, Shannon is widely recognized for his work on patient safety.
“Rick Shannon is a clear choice for this important leadership position,” Sullivan said. “He is nationally recognized for patient-care innovation, research, educational and clinical experience. The University will benefit greatly from a leader like Dr. Shannon, who has a strong management track record within a complex, academic health center.”
Shannon will begin work by the first of November.
