UVa Professor Under Investigation Files Lawsuit Against School

February 20, 2013

The University of Virginia professor under investigation for allegedly stealing up to one million dollars from the school is fighting back with a lawsuit of his own.

Doctor Paul Allaire, a long-time professor in the Engineering Department at UVa, is suing for $100,000 in damages.

According to court documents, Allaire claims the school violated his rights last month when UVa Police conducted a ten hour search of his home on Emmerson Drive in Albemarle County.

Police seized dozens of computer drives and hundreds of files from the professor’s home office.

Allaire wants those materials back and to block them from being used as evidence against him. He is also seeking $100,000 from UVa in damages.

According to search warrants filed in January, Allaire is accused of using UVa equipment and his position as the head of ROMAC to take steer money and business to his personal consulting company.

In response, UVa attorneys have filed their own paperwork objecting to the lawsuit and asking the judge to dismiss the case.

They are also asking for Allaire to pay for the University's court costs in the matter.

No charges have been filed against Allaire. According to court documents, the university placed Allaire on administrative leave last May.
