Some shoeless University of Virginia students are strutting around grounds this week to raise money for the Nicaraguan Orphan Fund.

More than two dozen students are taking part in the exercise after being inspired by a spring break trip to Nicaragua this year. They say more than half of students in Nicaragua aren't able to finish school.

"We hope that it's a weird thing to do,so when we walk around grounds, we hope people will be like, 'Why is that girl going barefoot?'" said Paige Breeden, a UVa. Second year. "It will spark a question and get them to learn about our cause and everything.

The funds they raise will help pay teacher salaries and get backpacks for the kids.

The fundraiser caps off on Saturday with a 5k race beginning at Clark Hall on McCormick Road.
