U.Va. Keeps $3B Campaign Goal In Sight

May 15, 2011

Approximately $600 million stands between the University of Virginia and a $3 billion fundraising campaign.

Bridging that gap falls to Robert D. Sweeney, who has less than eight months to achieve that goal. Sweeney is U.Va.'s senior vice president for development and public affairs.

Sweeney told the Daily Progress of Charlottesville he considers the ambitious $3 billion finish line within reach.

The campaign stalled in 2008 when the recession set in. Then, last Thanksgiving, the money began flowing back.

The campaign began under U.Va. President James T. Casteen III, who is now retired. It is now being reframed to reflect the university's new president, Teresa A. Sullivan, who took over in August.

Sweeney said Sullivan has brought new energy to the effort.
