The University of Virginia has unveiled its newest building. The Hunter Smith Band Building was dedicated at a ceremony Friday afternoon in Charlottesville.
The state-of-the-art $12.7 million facility sits on Culbreth Road. It contains three levels of rehearsal halls, practice rooms, instrument and uniform storage and offices. It will house the University’s Cavalier Marching Band, which does not have a dedicated practice facility, as well as the men's and women's basketball bands, the bands for the olympic sports, the wind ensemble, and the concert band.
In previous years, the marching band had to compete with athletic teams for indoor practice space. Now, members say they're happy to have a place of their own.
"It really means a lot that we have our own space," said third-year student Sally Golden. "We can really relax here and feel at home here, and we can really feel at home as part of the marching band at the University."
The building will include a large rehearsal room sized to accommodate 250 musicians, small ensemble rehearsal rooms, a teaching studio/individual rehearsal room, and band offices and support spaces.
The building is named after longtime university band supporter Hunter J. Smith.
