The University of Virginia has a new $1.5 million electron microscope, one of 18 such instruments at universities nationwide.
The scanning-transmission microscope uses a high-energy beam of electrons to magnify samples up to about two million times, allowing scientists to view their structures almost to their atomic level. The microscope will be on display at a dedication event Friday at the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
The microscope is a gift from tobacco giant Altria and is part of a $25 million investment in independent research at UVA in areas in which the company has an interest.
