UVa’s Accreditor Says Sullivan Ouster Has ‘Raised Questions’ About Compliance

June 26, 2012

The unexpected ouster of President Teresa A. Sullivan of the University of Virginia has drawn the attention of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ Commission on Colleges, the institution’s accrediting agency.

Mark Smith, the agency’s vice president, wrote in an e-mail to Ms. Sullivan on Monday that news reports about the weeks-long controversy have “raised questions” about the university’s compliance with the agency’s principles of accreditation.

The university must now prepare a report that documents its compliance with certain accrediting standards.

“In accord with Commission policy on the receipt of unsolicited information, the institution’s response will be reviewed, and if Commission staff determines that the information is of factual substance and is accreditation related, the information and documentation, along with the institution’s response will be forwarded to the Committees on Compliance and Reports for formal review,” Mr. Smith wrote. “Or, it is possible that the President of the Commission could authorize a Special Committee to review the institution.”
