VDOT Crews to Treat Central Va. Roads for Wintry Conditions

Jan. 2, 2014

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to use extreme caution on roads in Central Virginia tonight and early Friday morning as the area receives its first winter precipitation of 2014.

Though little snow accumulation is expected, moisture on the road surface will combine with dropping temperatures to create black ice.

VDOT crews in the Culpeper District will work overnight Thursday to treat roads with sand and salt to improve traction and speed the melting process.

Crews will focus their efforts first on the interstates and primary highways and move to secondary roads as conditions warrant.

Officials say drivers who must travel should expect to encounter slick conditions beginning this evening. The forecast also calls for high winds overnight, which may bring down power lines, trees and other debris.
