VDOT Remains Under Budget for Snow Removal

March 25, 2013

The Virginia Department of Transportation has used about two-thirds of the money it budgeted for snow removal this winter in Central Virginia.

VDOT crews have responded to a total of 23 storms this winter, although most of them were minor. The department budgeted $9 million for snow removal, and before March's snow storms, had used $6 million. Officials say, even after the two accumulating snowstorms in March, they are still below budget.

And even if an April snowstorm requires them to exceed the $9 million budget, they will still remove the snow.

"We're going to continue to push snow," said VDOT spokesman Lou Hatter. "We've got to keep the roads clear. We've got to keep people safe when they're driving on the roads. So we will take care of that and we will manage that by adjusting our expenditures in other categories."

VDOT has responded to twice as many storms this winter compared to last winter.
