The Proffit Road bridge over the Rivanna River will close Monday for debris removal.

The bridge is a half-mile west of Route 20 in northern Albemarle County.

Crews from VDOT will bring in heavy equipment near the bridge to remove debris that's washed downstream during the summer's heavy rains. The trees and other material make the bridge more vulnerable to flooding.

Detour signs are posted in the area, telling drivers to take Watts Passage Road to Route 29, and the reverse, to avoid the area.

The road is scheduled to reopen on Wednesday.
