Va. County Adopts Resolution Concerning Proposed Mining Operation

November 11, 2012

The Virginia county that's home to one of the world's largest uranium deposits has adopted a resolution concerning a proposed mining operation.

But media outlets report that Pittsylvania County's resolution doesn't make any recommendation on whether the state's 30-year-old ban on uranium mining should be lifted or retained.

Instead, the resolution approved Monday by the county Board of Supervisors suggests that state lawmakers review studies of the proposed mining's effects. It also cites the potential for hundreds of jobs, along with safety regulations and environmental concerns.

Virginia Uranium Inc. is seeking an end to the state's ban so it can tap the 119 million-pound deposit.

The General Assembly is expected to take up the mining ban in its 2013 session.
