Virginia's oyster harvest has reached the highest level since 1987.

Governor Bob McDonnell announced Monday that the 2012-13 harvest of the hard shell totaled 406,000 bushels, up 60 percent over the previous year. The harvest numbers include wild oysters and those grown in aquaculture farms.

Of the total harvest, 149,000 bushels were harvested from public oyster grounds and 257,000 from privately leased grounds.
