Va. Laws Help Keep Teen Drivers Safe

March 13, 2013

The Virginia General Assembly recently passed stricter guidelines for texting and driving.

However, the Commonwealth already has several laws that protect teens driving in other ways.

One of those laws doesn't allow teens to drive between midnight and 4:00 AM, unless they are with an adult or going to work or school.

Another law doesn't allow teens to use a cell phone at all while driving, even if it's hands-free, until they're 18.

Virginia law also prevents first-year drivers from having more than one teenage passenger.

"It's always a distraction having too many passengers in your vehicle, jumping around, talking, not being able to pay attention to the roadway and not have your full attention on the roadway at the time," said Albemarle County Police Officer David Rhodes.

Parents can also ask the DMV to revoke their teen's license.
