Va. Lt. Gov. to Announce Uranium Mining Position

DANVILLE, Virginia (AP) — Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling is traveling to Danville to announce his position on uranium mining in Virginia.

Bolling's office said the Republican will make his announcement Friday with area business leaders. His position is important because he is the McDonnell administration's job creation czar and proponents of uranium mining have argued that tapping a 119-million-pound deposit in Pittsylvania County would generate hundreds of jobs.

The lieutenant governor also casts tie-breaking votes in the Virginia Senate.

Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to mine the rich deposit of the ore in Southside Virginia, but the state has a 30-year ban on uranium mining.

Bolling was expected to run for the Republican nomination for governor but he decided to defer to Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. He has not ruled out an independent run.
