RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Authorities say a man who died after he stole and crashed a Richmond police car was wanted for failing to pay child support.
The Richmond Police Department said Tuesday that 32-year-old Timothy R. Howerton of Richmond owed the support in Colonial Heights.
Police say Howerton stole the car Monday afternoon following a confrontation with an officer.
Police say Howerton pointed a gun after the officer approached him Monday afternoon. The officer took cover behind his car and Howerton jumped into the vehicle and fled. He drove the car threw a gate and then crashed into the side of a vacant warehouse. The car caught fire. Howerton died at the scene.
Investigators later discovered that Howerton's weapon was a BB gun.
The officer wasn't injured.
